Cavapoo vs other small breeds: the Singapore comparison

By Nelson and Kim, AVS licensed pet shop owners · Updated 12 July 2026

Which small breed suits Singapore homes best?

For most Singapore households, the Cavapoo wins on the combination that matters here: apartment-friendly 3 to 10kg size, most of ours toy at 3 to 5kg, a low-shedding coat, and better alone-time tolerance than Maltipoos or Cavaliers. Cockapoos suit more active families; Toy Poodles suit allergy-first homes; Goldendoodles outgrow HDB flats.

Seven breeds, one honest table

Pick by routine, not by looks

Every breed in the table is cute; that is the trap. The question that separates a happy placement from a rehoming is the same one we ask in the shop: who is home from 8am to 6pm? Answer that first, and the table collapses to two or three honest candidates.

Then apply space and grooming tolerance. HDB flat rules out the Goldendoodle. Hate daily brushing? Skip the very curly coats. Want a jogging partner? That is a Cockapoo, not a Cavapoo. Our parent shop places most of these breeds, so the advice is not a funnel; it is the same Lifestyle-First matching we use across the counter.

The 3-question shortlist

  • Who is home 8am to 6pm? Sets alone-time need
  • HDB, condo or landed? Sets the size ceiling
  • How much brushing will you honestly do?
  • Then, and only then, compare the finalists

The head-to-heads Singapore actually searches

Cavapoo vs Cockapoo: the energy question

Same Poodle half, very different engine. The Cockapoo's Cocker Spaniel side is a working gundog, and it shows: expect an hour-plus of real exercise daily, against 20 to 30 minutes for a Cavapoo. In a landed home with active teens, the Cockapoo thrives; in a flat with two office workers, it gets bored before lunch.

Size overlaps (Cockapoos run slightly bigger at 6 to 12kg), coats groom similarly, and both train easily. Choose on energy, honestly assessed against your actual week, not your aspirational one.

Cockapoo in one card

  • Energy: high, needs 60+ min daily
  • Size: 6–12kg, slightly bigger
  • Coat: low-shed wavy, similar grooming
  • Best for: active families, longer walks
  • Flat + office hours: Cavapoo instead

Cavapoo vs Toy Poodle, and the Goldendoodle question

The Toy Poodle is the purist's choice: the sharpest mind and the lowest-shedding coat in this group, in a 3 to 6kg frame. What the Cavapoo adds is the Cavalier's softness, a rounder face, a cuddlier default setting, and a gentler edge with small children. Most families choosing between them are choosing between clever-and-crisp and clever-and-cuddly.

As for Goldendoodles: wonderful dogs, wrong container. Even mini lines commonly pass 15kg, well beyond sensible flat size. If you want the doodle look in an HDB flat, the Cavapoo at 3 to 10kg full grown is the honest version.

Quick verdicts

  • Allergy-first home: Toy Poodle by a nose
  • Cuddliest default: Cavapoo
  • Doodle look in an HDB flat: Cavapoo
  • Goldendoodle: needs space Singapore flats lack

Frequently asked questions

Which breed is best for a working couple in Singapore?

Among the small companion crosses, the Cavapoo: it tolerates 8am-to-6pm alone hours better than Maltipoos and Cavaliers, stays HDB-sized unlike most Goldendoodles, and needs less exercise than a Cockapoo. Pair it with a settled pen routine and a morning walk.

Is a Cavapoo calmer than a Cockapoo?

Generally yes. Cockapoos carry the working Cocker Spaniel engine and want noticeably more daily exercise. In a flat with short walk windows, the Cavapoo’s lower throttle is the safer match.

Cavapoo or Toy Poodle: which sheds less?

The Toy Poodle, marginally; it is the lowest-shedding option in this group. The Cavapoo trades a little of that for the Cavalier’s softer, cuddlier temperament. Both suit allergy-conscious homes better than most breeds.

Are Goldendoodles allowed in HDB flats?

Most Goldendoodles grow well past HDB’s small-breed framework; even so-called minis commonly exceed 15kg. If you live in a flat and love the doodle look, the Cavapoo delivers it at an HDB-appropriate 3 to 10kg, most of ours toy-sized at 3 to 5kg.

Do you sell the other breeds you compare against?

Our parent shop Curious Tails places Maltipoos, Cockapoos and Bichon crosses among others, so we earn nothing by steering you to a Cavapoo that does not fit. The comparison advice is the same we give across the counter.
