Cavapoo vs Cavachon: closer than sellers admit
By Nelson and Kim, AVS licensed pet shop owners · Updated 12 July 2026
What's the real difference between a Cavapoo and a Cavachon?
One parent. Both are Cavalier King Charles Spaniel crosses with the same affectionate core; the Cavapoo's Poodle side brings a curlier coat and a sharper training response, while the Cavachon's Bichon side brings a softer, wavier coat. In Singapore the practical difference is availability: Cavapoos are everywhere, Cavachons are rare.
| Trait | Cavapoo | Cavachon |
|---|---|---|
| Cross | Cavalier × Poodle | Cavalier × Bichon Frise |
| Adult size | 3–10kg (mostly toy, 3–5kg) | 6–10kg |
| Coat | wavy to curly, low-shed | soft wave, low-shed |
| Trainability | edge: Poodle quickness | very good, slightly slower |
| Grooming in humidity | mats fast when curly | fluff-dries, tangles at ears |
| SG availability | widely available | rare, occasional litters |
Coat and grooming: the humidity tiebreaker
In a dry climate this comparison is a coin flip. In Singapore's humidity, texture decides your weekly routine: a curly Cavapoo coat mats fastest and wants near-daily brushing, while the Cavachon's Bichon-style wave tangles mainly at the ears and armpits but puffs up in damp weather.
Either way you are booking professional grooming every 4 to 8 weeks; the difference is the brushing between sessions. A wavy F1 Cavapoo, incidentally, is the middle path most buyers do not consider; the grooming guide has the full schedule.
Grooming reality
- Curly Cavapoo: near-daily brushing
- Cavachon: ear and armpit tangles, damp frizz
- Both: professional trims every 4 to 8 weeks
- Middle path: a wavy F1 Cavapoo coat
The honest verdict
They are closer than the marketing implies, and both make gentle family companions. Pick the Cavachon if you love the teddy-soft Bichon coat, can wait for a rare litter, and do not mind paying scarcity pricing. Pick the Cavapoo for the sharper trainability, the spread of coats and colours to choose from, and availability measured in weeks.
Our Cavapoos run $3,288–$5,988 all-in; for Cavachon availability we will tell you honestly what exists, even when the answer is not us.
Choose by
- Cavachon: teddy coat + patience for the wait
- Cavapoo: trainability + choice + availability
- Temperament: near-identical Cavalier warmth
- Either: same one-dog HDB rules apply
Frequently asked questions
What is the main difference between a Cavapoo and a Cavachon?
The second parent. Both start with a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel; the Cavapoo adds a Poodle, the Cavachon adds a Bichon Frise. That one swap changes coat texture, grooming style and a notch of trainability, while the warm Cavalier temperament stays.
Which sheds less, Cavapoo or Cavachon?
They are close; both are low-shedding crosses. Curly Poodle-side coats (especially F1b Cavapoos) hold hair best, while the Cavachon’s soft Bichon wave releases slightly more. Neither will coat your sofa the way a shedding breed does.
Is a Cavachon calmer than a Cavapoo?
Sources genuinely conflict on this, and our observed sample of Cavachons is small. Treat calmness as an individual trait: meet the puppy, watch its energy, and weigh the parents, rather than betting on the label.
Are Cavachons available in Singapore?
Far less than Cavapoos. A few shops list them occasionally, but if your timeline is months rather than a year, the Cavapoo is the realistic way to get the Cavalier-cross temperament. Ask us on WhatsApp and we will be straight about current availability.
