Cavapoo vs Shih Tzu: the new cross vs the old favourite

By Nelson and Kim, AVS licensed pet shop owners · Updated 12 July 2026

Cavapoo or Shih Tzu for a Singapore flat?

Both fit flats and both charm grandparents; the practical splits are heat and training. The Shih Tzu's flat face struggles more in our climate and its independent streak slows toilet training, while the Cavapoo breathes easy and learns fast. Choose the Shih Tzu for its iconic look and HDB-listed pedigree of familiarity; choose the Cavapoo for easier daily life.

Heat is the honest tiebreaker

Ask any groomer or vet here: flat-faced breeds carry a climate tax in Singapore. The Shih Tzu pants less efficiently, overheats sooner on the same walk, and spends more of its life needing the aircon its ancestors never met. Managed carefully, with dawn walks and trimmed coats, they live happily here; they simply need more managing.

The Cavapoo walks the same morning route without the engineering concerns, which is why our hot-weather guide reads as routine advice rather than survival instructions. If a household member already frets about heat, that settles the comparison.

Frequently asked questions

Which handles Singapore heat better, a Cavapoo or a Shih Tzu?

The Cavapoo, clearly. The Shih Tzu’s flat face makes panting less efficient, so hot walks and humid afternoons hit it harder; snoring and heat stress are everyday realities. The Cavapoo’s normal muzzle copes like any small dog with sensible walk timing.

Is a Shih Tzu HDB approved?

Yes, the Shih Tzu is on the HDB named-breed list, one of the reasons it has been a Singapore staple for decades. The Cavapoo clears the same bar in practice; our licence transfers to HDB households have never flagged the breed.

Which is easier to train?

The Cavapoo, by a distance. Shih Tzus are affectionate but famously independent-minded about toilet training and recall; expect weeks longer on both. The Cavapoo’s Poodle side makes it one of the quickest small-breed learners.

Which sheds less?

Close to a tie, differently delivered: the Shih Tzu’s long double coat drops little but demands daily combing or a permanent short clip, while the Cavapoo’s low-shed coat needs brushing a few times weekly. Grooming salon bills land similar.
