Cavapoo vs Maltese: the cross vs the classic

By Nelson and Kim, AVS licensed pet shop owners · Updated 12 July 2026

Cavapoo or Maltese for a Singapore home?

The Maltese is the classic HDB-listed white companion: tiny, devoted, and happiest with someone home most of the day. The Cavapoo trades the iconic white silk for easier training, quieter corridors and better tolerance of working hours. Retiree household: either thrives. Office household: the Cavapoo, honestly.

Same sofa, different soundtrack

Both breeds exist to be adored, and both do flats beautifully on size alone. Live with each for a week and the difference is audible: the Maltese narrates the corridor, announcing lifts, footsteps and delivery riders with terrier conviction, while the Cavapoo files one report and returns to the sofa.

The second difference is your work schedule. Maltese devotion turns to daytime whining in empty flats, the same pattern as its Maltipoo descendant in ourMaltipoo comparison. If the flat empties from 8am to 6pm, the alone-time maths favours the Cavapoo before looks even enter the conversation.

Frequently asked questions

Do Maltese bark more than Cavapoos?

Yes, noticeably. The Maltese is an alert, vocal little watchdog, quick to announce lift doors and corridor footsteps, while the Cavapoo alert-barks and settles. In an HDB corridor, that difference is the one neighbours notice.

Which handles being alone better?

The Cavapoo. Maltese are companion dogs to their core and lean clingy, with daytime whining a common complaint in working households. A routine-trained Cavapoo treats your workday as nap time.

Is the Maltese coat harder to keep than a Cavapoo coat?

Kept long, yes: the silky white coat demands daily combing and shows every tear stain. Most Singapore Maltese live in a short puppy clip, which brings the workload down to Cavapoo levels. White fur near eyes will always need the daily wipe.

Is a Maltese or Cavapoo better for first-time owners?

The Cavapoo, mainly on trainability and alone-time tolerance. The Maltese rewards experienced patience: toilet training runs slower and the barking habit needs early, consistent work. Retiree households with someone home all day do beautifully with either.
