Cavapoo temperament: what they're really like to live with

By Nelson and Kim, AVS licensed pet shop owners · Updated 12 July 2026

Are Cavapoos good for first-time owners in Singapore?

Yes. The Cavapoo pairs the Cavalier's gentle, affectionate nature with the Poodle's trainability, and it tolerates a working household's alone hours better than most small companion breeds. That combination, gentle, teachable, and reasonably independent, is why it is our most recommended first dog.

The temperament in five traits

Affectionate

Cavalier warmth; wants to be where you are

People-oriented

Bonds with the whole household, not one person

Quick learner

Poodle brains; toilet training is genuinely achievable

Moderate energy

Short walks plus indoor play covers it

Moderate barker

Alert barks, not a yapper; boredom is the trigger

Alone-time tolerance: the trait that matters most in Singapore

Most temperament write-ups are written for countries where someone is home all day. Singapore's reality is 8am to 6pm out of the flat, and that is the lens we judge breeds through at the shop. The Cavapoo's Poodle side gives it more self-sufficiency than the clingier breeds it gets compared with.

The most common mismatch we see is a couple set on a Maltipoo when both work full office days; Maltipoos want far more daytime company. We have redirected that mismatch to a Cavapoo more than once, and those are the placements that come back with five-star reviews. See the full Maltipoo comparison and the alone-time guide.

The honest limit: no puppy copes with 12-hour absences seven days a week. If that is the season of life you are in, we will say wait, and mean it kindly.

Alone-hours reality check

  • Home most days: any small companion breed works
  • Hybrid week: Cavapoo thrives with a pen routine
  • Full office days: Cavapoo over clingier lookalikes
  • Rarely home before 9pm: wait, honestly

With kids, grandparents and other pets

Multi-generation households are where Cavapoos shine. They are patient with children's handling, gentle enough for elderly laps, and social with other pets when introduced young. In a country where three generations often share a flat on weekends, that versatility is a real feature, not a brochure line.

The one house rule we teach every family at delivery: the pen is the puppy's room, and children do not reach into it. It gives the dog a retreat and prevents the overtired nipping that gets wrongly blamed on temperament.

Household fit

  • Patient with young children, supervised
  • Calm enough for elderly family members
  • Social with cats and dogs, introduced young
  • House rule: the pen is a no-reach zone

The less-cute bits, honestly

No breed page should read like a brochure. Cavapoos can turn velcro if the routine is sloppy, and a bored Cavapoo will bark at the corridor. Some are picky eaters, a trait owners on Cavapoo forums complain about constantly. And puppy teething, around four months, chews whatever you forgot to move.

Every one of these is routine-fixable, which is exactly what the included first training lesson and our WhatsApp aftercare are for. The unvarnished list lives in ten honest reasons a Cavapoo might not suit you, and the fixes in the behavior guide.

Know before you buy

  • Velcro tendency if alone-time is never practised
  • Boredom barking without morning exercise
  • Picky-eater streak in some individuals
  • Teething phase around month four
  • All four are routine problems, not breed flaws

Frequently asked questions

Are Cavapoos good with young children?

Yes, among the most patient small breeds we place. The Cavalier side gives them a soft mouth and tolerance for clumsy handling. Supervise toddlers as with any dog, and teach kids to leave the puppy alone in its pen; that one rule prevents most problems.

Do Cavapoos get separation anxiety?

They can, like any people-oriented breed, but they are noticeably more resilient than Maltipoos or Cavaliers. The difference is routine: a Cavapoo that learns from week one that alone time in the pen is normal handles a working household well.

Are Cavapoos yappy?

No, they are moderate barkers. Expect alert barks at the doorbell and boredom barking only if exercise and routine slip. Compared with the toy breeds common in Singapore flats, Cavapoos are on the quieter side.

Do Cavapoos get along with cats and other dogs?

Generally yes, especially introduced young. They are social rather than territorial. Take introductions slowly over a week or two with a barrier first; the Cavapoo is rarely the problem party.

Are male or female Cavapoos calmer?

Individual personality outweighs gender in this breed. We match on the specific puppy’s energy, observed over weeks in our care, rather than on a male-versus-female rule of thumb.
