Puppyhood
How much do Cavapoo puppies actually sleep?
By Nelson and Kim, AVS licensed pet shop owners · Updated 12 July 2026
How much sleep does a Cavapoo puppy need?
Eighteen to twenty hours a day at nine weeks old, in naps around meals and play, easing to 14 to 16 hours by the first birthday. Most so-called behavior problems in the first months, nipping, evening zoomies, whining, are a puppy running short of exactly this.

The maths nobody does
Twenty hours of sleep leaves four awake, split into six or eight short shifts. A household that keeps the puppy up through every family evening is spending its entire waking budget on excitement, then wondering about thenipping and zoomies. The pen exists to make napping non-negotiable; that is its main job, before toilet training.
The rhythm that works
Wake, toilet, meal or play, toilet again, pen nap, repeat, roughly every two hours through the day. In a working household the long daytime pen stretch is simply a longer nap, which is why routined Cavapoos handleworkday absences so calmly: you are not leaving a lonely puppy, you are leaving a sleeping one.
Nights, briefly
First nights: pen beside the bed, one calm overnight toilet trip, boring responses to crying. Within two or three weeks most puppies hold six to seven hours, and the overnight trip retires around month four with bladder maturity. Full details in the homecoming checklist.
Sleep debt symptoms
- Evening zoomies and hand-nipping
- Whining that no attention fixes
- Frantic, unfocusable play
- The fix is a pen nap, not more play
- Bright-when-awake = healthy sleeper
Frequently asked questions
How many hours a day should a Cavapoo puppy sleep?
Eighteen to twenty hours at nine weeks, easing to 14 to 16 by the first birthday. If that sounds impossible against what you see, count the micro-naps; if they are missing, the puppy is running a sleep debt and behaving like it.
Should I wake my puppy for meals or toilet trips?
For meals, gently, yes, routine beats an extra twenty minutes of napping. For daytime toilet timing, take the puppy out when it wakes naturally; sleep-interrupting toilet runs are only for the overnight stretch in the first weeks.
When will my Cavapoo sleep through the night?
Most sleep six to seven hours straight within two to three weeks of homecoming, with one overnight toilet break needed until around month four. Pen beside the bed for the first nights makes the transition dramatically quieter.
Is my puppy sick or just sleepy? It sleeps all day.
A puppy that sleeps deeply but wakes bright, eats keenly and plays hard is doing exactly its job. The worrying combination is sleepiness plus flat energy when awake, refusing food, or vomiting; within the first 5 days home, that means bring it back to us, afterwards your vet.
