Training

Training a Cavapoo puppy, from week 9 onward

By Nelson and Kim, AVS licensed pet shop owners · Updated 12 July 2026

Are Cavapoos easy to train?

Yes. Cavapoos combine the Poodle's working intelligence with the Cavalier's eagerness to please, which makes them one of the most forgiving first dogs to train. Short, positive sessions beat long ones, and a consistent pen-and-toilet routine from day one does more than any command list.

Our unpopular training opinion: routine beats information

New owners arrive having read forty articles and still feel unprepared. Here is what we tell every family at handover: you do not need more information, you need a simple routine and someone to call when unsure. Same wake time, same feeding times, same walk slot, same pen naps; the puppy learns the shape of the day, and most behaviour problems never get the chance to start.

That is also why the first training lesson with an AVS-certified trainer is included with every puppy, and why aftercare WhatsApp exists. A two-line answer at the right moment beats a bookmark folder.

The whole philosophy

  • Fixed daily rhythm from day one
  • Two-second praise window for wins
  • No punishment: it only teaches hiding
  • Five-minute sessions, twice a day
  • Stuck? WhatsApp us before it becomes a habit

The weeks 9 to 16 plan

WeeksFocusWhat good looks like
9–10settling, name, pen routine, traysleeps in pen, responds to name, tray hits climbing
10–12toilet consistency, gentle handling, alone-time drillstolerates brushing, calm 20-minute solo stretches
12–143rd vaccination, then wider socialisationmeets new people and sounds without overwhelm
14–16sit, come, leash basics; first lesson bookedshort leash walks, reliable recall indoors

Socialisation timing beyond the pen follows your vet's advice around the week-12 vaccination.

Toilet training with the kit you already have

The starter kit is a toilet-training system in disguise: pee pads, pee tray, training spray and odor remover. Tray in the pen from day one, training spray on it, puppy placed there after every meal, nap and play burst, praise within two seconds of success.

Misses get cleaned with the odor remover, silently; regular cleaners leave a scent invitation to repeat. Expect 2 to 4 weeks to reliability, longer if the routine wobbles on weekends, and remember that a 9-week bladder physically cannot hold through a workday without a midday break. Day-one setup lives in the homecoming checklist.

Tray rules that work

  • After every meal, nap and play burst
  • Praise within two seconds, or it did not count
  • Odor remover on misses, zero drama
  • Weekend routine = weekday routine
  • Midday break until at least month four

Alone-time training for working households

The skill that decides whether a working couple's Cavapoo thrives is taught, not born: being alone is boring and safe. Start day one with one-minute absences, keys jangling and all, and build to twenty minutes within the first fortnight, always returning before the whining starts, not after.

Pair every departure with a food puzzle that only appears when you leave. By the time real workdays begin, the pen means snacks and naps, not abandonment. It is the single highest-return drill in this guide for Singapore households.

The departure drill

  • Day 1: sixty-second absences, no fuss either way
  • Add minutes only after calm successes
  • Special toy that exists only when you leave
  • Return before whining, never because of it
  • Workday-ready by week 12 for most puppies

Frequently asked questions

Are Cavapoos easy to train?

Yes, among the easiest small breeds. The Poodle side wants to work with you and the Cavalier side wants to please you, so short positive sessions get quick results. Toilet training is realistically done within weeks for most families who keep the routine.

How long does it take to toilet train a Cavapoo?

Most of our families report reliable pee-tray habits in 2 to 4 weeks. The formula: tray inside the pen from day one, praise within two seconds of a correct go, and no punishment for misses, which only teaches hiding.

When should Cavapoo training start?

The day it comes home at week 9. Name, pen routine and toilet training start immediately; basic cues like sit begin around week 10 to 12; and socialisation ramps up after the week-12 vaccination per your vet’s advice.

How do I stop my Cavapoo puppy from biting during teething?

Redirect, every time, to a chew toy from the kit; teething peaks around month four and passes. Yelp-and-pause teaches bite pressure; hands are never toys. If nipping spikes in the evening, the puppy is usually overtired, so pen it for a nap rather than more correction.

What does the free first training lesson cover?

An AVS-certified trainer covers the foundations with your actual household: pen and toilet routine, name response, calm greetings and your specific questions. It is included with every puppy, and most families book it within the first two weeks home.
