Do Cavapoos shed? The honest answer
By Nelson and Kim, AVS licensed pet shop owners · Updated 12 July 2026
Do Cavapoos shed?
Cavapoos are low-shedding, not non-shedding. Curl decides it: the closer a coat sits to the Poodle side, the less hair reaches your floor, with F1b coats shedding least and F1 coats varying by puppy. Across 100+ placements, our advice never changes: judge the coat in front of you, not the label.

What hypoallergenic actually means
Allergens live in dander and saliva, not only in loose hair. A low-shedding coat helps because it traps dander instead of redistributing it across your sofa, which is why many allergy-sensitive owners do well with a Cavapoo. What no honest seller will promise is zero reaction; that guarantee does not exist in any breed.
If allergies are the reason you chose this cross, spend real time with the specific puppy before deciding. Ten minutes of cuddling tells you more than ten articles.
F1 vs F1b: why the generation changes the coat
An F1b Cavapoo carries roughly three-quarters Poodle coat genetics, so it curls tighter and drops less. F1 coats genuinely vary within one litter, from Cavalier-leaning waves that shed lightly to curls that barely shed at all. Thegenerations guide unpacks the labels; the short version is that letters predict probability, and the puppy settles the answer.
The trade nobody mentions: less shedding, more matting
Hair that does not fall out stays in the coat, and in Singapore humidity it knots. The lowest-shedding Cavapoos are the fastest-matting ones, which is why thegrooming schedule pairs curly coats with near-daily brushing. Pick your trade: hair on the floor or minutes with the slicker brush.
The coat-change window
Between six and twelve months the puppy coat gives way to the adult coat. Owners panic at the sudden extra fluff on the floor; it is normal, temporary, and the one period where even an F1b sheds noticeably. Brush through it and the adult coat arrives curlier and more settled, often a shade lighter too.
Quick coat facts
- Low-shedding, never zero-shedding
- F1b (curlier) sheds least; F1 varies
- Dander, not hair, drives allergies
- Less shedding = more brushing, always
- Coat change at 6 to 12 months is normal
Frequently asked questions
Are Cavapoos fully hypoallergenic?
No dog is fully hypoallergenic; allergens come from dander and saliva, not just hair. Cavapoos are low-shedding, and curlier coats release less hair and dander around the home, which many allergy-sensitive owners tolerate well. Meet the puppy before committing if allergies are severe.
Which Cavapoo generation sheds the least?
F1b Cavapoos, at roughly 75% Poodle, usually carry the curliest, lowest-shedding coats. F1 coats vary within a single litter from light-shedding waves to near-Poodle curls. The individual coat in front of you matters more than the label.
Do Cavapoo puppies shed their puppy coat?
Yes, between roughly 6 and 12 months the soft puppy coat transitions to the adult coat. Expect a few months of extra loose hair and faster matting during the swap; brush more, not less, through this window.
Will a Cavapoo trigger my dust-mite or general allergies?
Different allergy, different answer. Low-shedding coats help specifically with dog dander and hair; they do nothing for dust mites or other triggers. If your allergies are serious, spend an hour with the actual puppy first and see how you respond.
