The fork in the road
Adopting vs buying a Cavapoo in Singapore
By Nelson and Kim, AVS licensed pet shop owners · Updated 12 July 2026
Should I adopt or buy a Cavapoo in Singapore?
If your heart is set specifically on a Cavapoo puppy, buying from a licensed shop is the realistic route; the cross almost never reaches shelters here. If what you want is a good small dog and the breed is negotiable, adoption through SPCA, SOSD or Project ADORE groups is cheaper, kinder maths, and full of good dogs.

Why this page exists on a seller's site
A pet shop writing an adoption guide sounds like a trap; here is the logic. Our business only works when placements stick, and a buyer who actually wanted the shelter route makes a wobbly Cavapoo owner. Better to route people honestly and keep the placements we make solid. Also, frankly: the people this page redirects were rarely our buyers anyway.
The honest decision matrix
Choose buying when the specifics matter: this breed, a known puppy history, vaccination records from week 6, predictable size and coat for an HDB flat, and support after handover. Choose adoption when the dog matters more than the breed: adult dogs with formed temperaments, fees of $0 to $350, and the plain good of a rehomed animal. Both are honourable; only the unlicensed middle, marketplace puppies of no traceable origin, deserves the stigma.
Doing adoption properly in Singapore
Start with SPCA Singapore, SOSD, Action for Singapore Dogs or Voices for Animals, and expect a home visit and an honest conversation about your hours; good groups screen like we do. HDB households can adopt larger local mixed-breeds throughProject ADORE, up to 55cm, one dog per flat. The same alone-time honesty applies whichever route you take.
The two routes
- Buy: breed-specific, records, week-9 puppy
- Adopt: $0 to $350, adult dogs, breed flexible
- Both: identical running costs afterward
- Neither: marketplace puppies, no origin
- HDB adopters: Project ADORE widens the list
Frequently asked questions
Can I adopt a Cavapoo in Singapore?
Occasionally, but rarely: designer crosses seldom reach shelters here, and when one does, waiting lists form fast. Realistic adoption means opening your criteria to Singapore Specials and small mixed breeds through groups like SPCA, SOSD, Voices for Animals or Action for Singapore Dogs.
How much does adopting a dog cost versus buying?
Adoption fees run about $0 to $350, covering sterilisation and vaccinations in most cases, versus $3,288 to $5,988 all-in for our Cavapoos. The yearly running costs afterward, $1,500 to $2,500, are identical whichever door the dog came through.
Is buying a puppy unethical when shelters have dogs?
The honest answer: both routes are legitimate when done responsibly. What actually harms dogs is the unlicensed middle, smuggled puppies bought from marketplace listings. Whichever route you take, take it through licensed shops or registered welfare groups.
Why do adopted dogs under Project ADORE fit HDB flats?
Project ADORE lets HDB households adopt local mixed-breed dogs up to 55cm through participating rehoming groups, one dog per flat with training conditions. It exists precisely to widen HDB-friendly adoption beyond the small-breed list.
